The Effect of Delayed Auditory Feedback in the Treatment of Stutterers

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of intensive servotherapy using
Delayed Auditory Feedback(DAF) in the treatment of stutterers.
20 stutterers were examined for 3 weeks, from October 21, 1985 to November 8, 1985 at
speech therapy section, Department of Rehabilitation, Kang Nam St. Mary¢¥s Hospital. Subjects were devided into two groups; control group(N=10) and experimental group(N=
10), randomly. In the control group, phoneme prolongation and psychotherapy program
were provided, and DAF therapy program was added in experimental group.
SSI test was applied to all subjects, individually, two times before and after the study to
evaluate the effect of DAF treatment.
The results were as follows:
1) In the control group, there was no significant difference of scores in SSI test between pre-and-post-treatment (p> . 05).
2) In the experimental group, total SSI test scores(from 24.4_5.02 to 21.8=8.59, P<. 001), frequency(from 9.8¡¾3.01 to 6.6¡¾2.59, p<.01), duration(from 3.7 0.82 to 1.7 0.82, p`.001), and physical concomitants (from 11. 5---;-2.32 to 2.6=2.37, p(.001) were significantly decreased after DAF treatment, respectively. This means that the stuttering was generally improved and simplified in the experimental group.
3) Above results implied that servotherapy using DAF can be applied to the treatment of stutterers.
